Summary

New characters are introduced。 The protomolecule arc expands, and the action is very actiony。 There are some large differences between the book and the TV series season that covers this book, and on the whole I prefer the book's account of those events。 I am really enjoying this read-through。 New characters are introduced。 The protomolecule arc expands, and the action is very actiony。 There are some large differences between the book and the TV series season that covers this book, and on the whole I prefer the book's account of those events。 I am really enjoying this read-through。 。。。more

I liked this one even better than the first, and I think it greatly benefitted from the addition of a few new points of view (particularly Avasarala and Bobbie)。 Prax gives such an interesting 'everyman' perspective on all the terrifying, life-threatening things the other characters can make seem mundane。 The main characters are so easy to root for - they're underdogs fighting against the political grain to do what's right。 I liked this one even better than the first, and I think it greatly benefitted from the addition of a few new points of view (particularly Avasarala and Bobbie)。 Prax gives such an interesting 'everyman' perspective on all the terrifying, life-threatening things the other characters can make seem mundane。 The main characters are so easy to root for - they're underdogs fighting against the political grain to do what's right。 。。。more

Wow, I continue to be blown away by this series。 Science Fiction is normally not my thing, but Corey manages to create some of the most compelling and interesting characters。 Our core cast returns, with the addition of a few new characters。 My favorite has to be the Earth politician Chrisjen Avasarala。 She is amazing, and inserts some much needed perspective to the characters, who otherwise have very narrow focuses on events。 What I think works so well about this series is that we have these sys Wow, I continue to be blown away by this series。 Science Fiction is normally not my thing, but Corey manages to create some of the most compelling and interesting characters。 Our core cast returns, with the addition of a few new characters。 My favorite has to be the Earth politician Chrisjen Avasarala。 She is amazing, and inserts some much needed perspective to the characters, who otherwise have very narrow focuses on events。 What I think works so well about this series is that we have these system wide threats brewing on Venus, but the root of the conflict is from human error and greed, ignoring the much wider threat that the book never quite lets the reader forget about。 That, combined with nuanced and well rounded characters creates and incredibly engaging reading experience, painting a future that is both familiar and alien。 I see why people have been raving about this series。 The end also is。。。 wow! 。。。more

I'm more and more impressed with The Expanse (the show) with each book。 The adaptation is just so good。 They made great choices about how to move the story along at a tv pace vs。 book pace and the characters that are and aren't in each make perfect sense。 I'm more and more impressed with The Expanse (the show) with each book。 The adaptation is just so good。 They made great choices about how to move the story along at a tv pace vs。 book pace and the characters that are and aren't in each make perfect sense。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Notes to self。* Great characters, both new and old。 Good way to do it。 If we where introduced to all of these characters in book 1, it would be too much。 The universe is expanding, and so is the scope of the books and the number of characters in it。 * Fun to have different point of views。 Fun when the POV characters meet。* The chapters feels like episodes, like in a TV show (perhaps partly because I have watched the show)。* Intriguing ending。 A cliffhanger, but not annoyingly so。* Only minus is Notes to self。* Great characters, both new and old。 Good way to do it。 If we where introduced to all of these characters in book 1, it would be too much。 The universe is expanding, and so is the scope of the books and the number of characters in it。 * Fun to have different point of views。 Fun when the POV characters meet。* The chapters feels like episodes, like in a TV show (perhaps partly because I have watched the show)。* Intriguing ending。 A cliffhanger, but not annoyingly so。* Only minus is the on-off relationship between Holden and Naomi。 。。。more

This is one of those rare cases where the sequel is as good if not better than the first book。 Again, great cast of characters, well paced and the ending。。。 the ending makes me want to start listening to Abaddon's Gate right away。 This is one of those rare cases where the sequel is as good if not better than the first book。 Again, great cast of characters, well paced and the ending。。。 the ending makes me want to start listening to Abaddon's Gate right away。 。。。more

I suppose I’m in the minority here but I liked the focus of Leviathan Wakes more than this。 2 characters vs 4, gave me a True Detective Season 1 vs 2 vibe。 This also just felt like a giant detour, the plot in this book just wasn’t all that interesting and the cliffhanger is just resuming the more interesting arc from the first book。Will give the third book a shot, if only because it’s already on my bookshelf, but hoping it picks up again。

I cannot get enough of these characters。 They are well rounded and lovable。 The “family” they’ve created makes a great story。 Avasarala is my favorite badass, potty mouthed grandmother in a high political position。 😃

a total slog for the most part, and most of the new characters just dont stick as much as id like。 i mentioned in my review of the first expanse book that this reads like a tv series and while thats true this book especially feels dull on the page and is probably better on screen。 ill probably try the third one since these are pretty light and easy reads and i like some of the characters, but this one felt significantly less fun save for a few bits

The continuing story of “The Expanse” is getting more suspenseful and thrilling as we see Holden and our other crew find themselves in a space tangle as they’re not only dealing with tensions between Earth and Mars, there is a possible alien virus discovered on Ganymede and Prax’s daughter Mei has been taken by a mysterious figure and will stop at nothing to find her before danger happens。 A (100%/Outstanding)

Simon

Just as good as the first book。 New characters are even better。

Kristie Heath

Outstanding! Edge of my seat the whole way。 Wow!!

I think you need to read the first book 'Leviathan Awakes' to enjoy this one。 Both of the books are good reads which I enjoyed a lot and recommend to folks who like sci-fi space stories。 I think you need to read the first book 'Leviathan Awakes' to enjoy this one。 Both of the books are good reads which I enjoyed a lot and recommend to folks who like sci-fi space stories。 。。。more

I’m writing the same review for each book in the Expanse series because…well, some are definitely better than others, but if you’re reading through the Expanse series, chances are that you’re invested in this world and these characters (unless you’re a super intense hate-reader, in which case, good luck with life?)。 You’re going to dig these books。 Speaking of digging this books: I do。 A lot。 I love them。 Five stars。 The world is most excellent, the pacing is wonderful - a nice balance of space I’m writing the same review for each book in the Expanse series because…well, some are definitely better than others, but if you’re reading through the Expanse series, chances are that you’re invested in this world and these characters (unless you’re a super intense hate-reader, in which case, good luck with life?)。 You’re going to dig these books。 Speaking of digging this books: I do。 A lot。 I love them。 Five stars。 The world is most excellent, the pacing is wonderful - a nice balance of space action and character-building and tender conversations。 Sometimes it drags, but so what? If you’re wondering if you should read the first book or read the books in order, the answer is yes。 Please do。 If you like space operas, science fiction, or think you’d be into an out-of-this-world sorta of Game of Thrones, this series is for you。 If you like series because you get to hang out with likeable characters for a longer period of time, this series is for you。 Highly recommend。 。。。more

So much better for having Avasarala。 I love a cranky old woman girl boss。 Holden is still a himbo, but everyone tells him how much he's being an asshat, so I'm cool with it。 I'm still disappointed that Naomi has nothing to do other than be an instant solver of problems, but her agency is getting a but of a workout。 For two male authors, the women aren't bad, but I'm still wary of how it could veer into garbage。 So much better for having Avasarala。 I love a cranky old woman girl boss。 Holden is still a himbo, but everyone tells him how much he's being an asshat, so I'm cool with it。 I'm still disappointed that Naomi has nothing to do other than be an instant solver of problems, but her agency is getting a but of a workout。 For two male authors, the women aren't bad, but I'm still wary of how it could veer into garbage。 。。。more

A drop in quality。 The sophomore slump as they say。 But still engaging and highly readable。

Just absolutely rules。 And Chrisjen Avasarala… what a character!

Fantastic science fiction book! The whole time I’m reading this book and the first book (Leviathan Wakes) I’m thinking this would make a great movie or series。 I’m telling my son about this great story。 He says that it sounds like The Expanse。 I’m surprised he has read it。 But then he says it’s on Prime。 So now I guess I will need to watch and compare the book to film versions。

Liked this one even more than the first! A little more political, more POVs, great story, and characters I really like getting to run around the solar system with。 Loving this series so far。 Very excited for the next one 🪐🛰🧑‍🚀

Yes! I have a feeling I’m going to love this series。 The motivations on this one were rock-solid (I wasn’t a huge fan of the ‘fridging’ in the first book) and was expecting the cast to suffer from Miller’s absence, but it never really did。Some parts of Holden’s arc seemed a little forced at parts, but it didn’t detract too much; far FAR outweighed by Amos’ subtle development and the new characters (I really loved Avasarala and Prax and Bobbie, all for different delightful reasons)。 Naomi and Ale Yes! Ok I think this book was better than book 1 in some ways, and worse in other ways。 Maybe it deserves a 3。5 stars idk。 The better: some more women, fewer annoying characters。 Avasarala is a great character, I love her, and I’m glad we got her POV。 Bobbie is fine as a POV, but at least she’s interesting。 I think this installment gave me much better characterization, so I was actually feeling invested in what happened to the characters, especially the first half, with Holden’s crew。 Amos is probabl Ok I think this book was better than book 1 in some ways, and worse in other ways。 Maybe it deserves a 3。5 stars idk。 The better: some more women, fewer annoying characters。 Avasarala is a great character, I love her, and I’m glad we got her POV。 Bobbie is fine as a POV, but at least she’s interesting。 I think this installment gave me much better characterization, so I was actually feeling invested in what happened to the characters, especially the first half, with Holden’s crew。 Amos is probably my favorite character, and I nearly shed a tear at his backstory。 But the most fun thing about book 1 was the absolutely bonkers plot, and this book was way too straightforward by comparison。 Everything was solved wayyyy too easily。 If Leviathan Wakes had 4-5 major plot climaxes, Caliban’s War had like 0。75 of a plot climax。 The epilogue intrigued me though, so I’m hoping book 3 could be a marriage of books 1 and 2’s strengths。 。。。more
